Your Questions, Answered

I work collaboratively with you to determine your photographic needs - what is it that you want to capture and what is the narrative or story that you wish to tell through the photography? Are there any “hero shots” you have in mind? On the day of the shoot, I work systematically to capture the project for optimal visual impact, following the movement of the light, highlighting areas of interest as it does so and being mindful of the way the mood and atmosphere shifts and using that to my advantage. On a technical note, I use specialised tilt-shift lenses where appropriate to maintain correct perspective and often take multiple exposures of a scene, blending them together manually in photoshop to replicate how a human eye might perceive the space. In addition to the above, each image goes through a rigorous post-production phase, handled entirely by me, to correct for brightness, colour, contrast, perspective and so forth. Distractions are removed where possible, and within reason, and the image is tidied up to deliver a magazine ready result.

I work very well in a self directed environment as it allows for free flowing creativity. And while it’s usually my preferred way of working, I am also comfortable responding to my client’s input as we work together collaboratively on a shoot. Some clients trust and prefer me to take the reins and exercise complete creative control, while others have a clear picture in their mind of what they want and like to be involved in the photographic process. So either or is fine - no need for you to be there or you can come along and be part of the action.

On some occasions I am available at short notice, at other times a week or 2 would be required. Architectural photography in Wellington and indeed New Zealand wide can be challenging due to the nature of our changeable weather and relatively high rainfall, so it also pays to be mindful of that when making the booking. I am flexible in my approach to unforeseen weather events, as far as possible - please see below for more info.

Overcast conditions do not have to be detrimental to the outcome of the shoot - the soft, even light can often be helpful in many circumstances. However, I cannot shoot in the rain - it never looks good and it’s not kind to electronic equipment, i.e. cameras and lenses. You might of course and understandably have a preference for clear, sunny conditions and thus I recommend that you have some leeway to allow for an alternative shoot date if the weather doesn’t cooperate. I will try to accommodate and reschedule you as best as I can but please keep an eye on the weather and inform me of your intentions to postpone at least 24 hrs before the shoot. But if your deadline is tight, I am confident of delivering a good result even under cloudy skies, or we can reschedule for the next sunny day that I have available. And yes, I’ll work on weekends and often public holidays too.

Yes, and it comes highly recommended as it really adds a sense of life and drama to the images, as well as illustrating the lighting design of course. Keep in mind that dusk in the middle of the year is around 5 pm and at the end/beginning of the year it is around 9 pm, for Wellington and central NZ at least. We’ll discuss the timing of the shoot when making the booking.

Yes I do and it’s very useful for establishing a sense of place and scale, and how it blends in or stands out from its immediate environment. It provides context and tells a story. As a certified 101 drone pilot, I am able to apply for and obtain permission to fly within controlled airspace that would otherwise be off limits.

While my focus (no pun intended) will be on the photographic side of things, I am happy to supplement the shoot with video material if that is a requirement, to save you the hassle of booking a videographer as well. If I am not able to meet your video needs, I will be upfront about that and recommend the use of a dedicated videography service instead.

The photographer (that will be me) owns the copyright, in other words you cannot sell or give away the images to your subcontractors or other third party, without my explicit written consent. Also see question below for more info on this. The way it works is that you will get a license to use the images for your website, award submissions, social media and other marketing purposes, whether that’s online or in print. There is no expiry date to the license I grant you, unless there’s a breach of course. Any third party that also wants to use the images for their own purposes must purchase a separate license from me. While it might sound complicated, it’s actually pretty straight forward but let me know if you require any clarification around this.
-
Yes you can but must be done by prior arrangement. I can enter into a cost sharing agreement with you and the other party(s) PRIOR to the shoot commencing, whereby the costs are split evenly between interested parties. So for example, if you are an architect hiring me for the shoot but the builder is also interested, we can split the costs between you if you are both in agreement, in exchange for a modest cost sharing fee levied on top of the total. However, I must stress that I can only enter into a cost sharing agreement prior to the shoot getting underway. If the builder or another party wants to access the images after the fact, they must purchase a license for use directly from me.

While I started my professional career photographing real estate listings, I have moved away from doing high volume, mass produced work, to focus on more creatively rewarding work. However, if you have a listing that requires a special touch, do get in… touch!

There are two components to my fee structure - a) time spent photographing on site (creative fee) and b) an editing/licensing fee. So it basically comes down to how long the shoot is going to take and how many images you would like delivered. There is plenty of scope to keep within your budget by tinkering with the above 2 variables. My rates are very reasonable and I deliver a premium result. Let’s talk.
-
Rigorous post-production is included in the editing/licensing fee, see the first question at the top of the page to see what is included. Extensive object removal and labour intensive site cleanup requests, may incur extra charges.

My approach is one of quality over quantity. Think HOME magazine, rather than the houses for sale section on Trademe. We are aiming for a premium, curated set of “hero” shots, with a high creative, technical and production value, that together tell your design story. In the end, the number of images delivered is determined by you, you may choose as many or as little as you want to meet your requirements and budget.

Generally 1-2 weeks from when the shoot is completed. If you have a tight deadline to meet, let me know and we can discuss - if I have the capacity I will do my best to accommodate you.
