I was asked by Kathmandu Holdings (Melbourne) to photograph their Wellington CBD store re-design in Willis Street. Photographed primarily on the morning of opening day, it featured a stunning wrap-around mural by local artist Sean Duffel.

Featured in the annual Green Issue of HOME magazine, the innovative design comprised of a “spine and ribs” builds on the whaling theme and won the 2021 Housing award at the NZIA Wellington awards.

Waitohi means a lot to me. As a Johnsonville local, I have watched it take shape during the construction phase as it was within easy walking distance of my home. The modern, glass fronted building contrasted strongly against the ageing mall across the road and other dated and uninspiring buildings in the suburb’s centre.

Mike gave me full scope to follow my creative instincts and it was a joy to follow the changing light and mood over the course of several hours from mid afternoon to twilight on a beautiful and calm autumn day.
